Broadway Stars

Second graders have a concert coming up. The theme of the concert is songs on Broadway. For this project, I wanted to give as little instruction as possible. I put out paper, pastels, and crayons. The kids traced a giant star and started creating!

This week, students punched holes around the edges of their background. Next week they will be "sewing" the edges with yarn.

They finished the background by painting in white lines however they chose to.

Second graders finished up their stars this week. They cut out and glued on their star to their background. Colored yarn was chosen and they sewed their edges to add some decoration. The art is all ready to be put up for the concert

Snowman at Sunset

This week kindergarten learned that colors can be classified into families called warm and cool colors. After that, they painted a sunset background using warm and cool colors.

This week, students worked on more of their snowman at sunset. They cut out snow, snowmen shapes and glued them on.

Kinders finished their snowmen today. They began by gluing on a frame. The next step was to add details to their snowman and to paint snow in the sky.

These turned out so great!!

Valentine Bunny

Today Kindergarteners learned a little about printmaking. They chose some colorful paper and spent time creating white printed hearts onto their paper.

Today Kinders finished up these cute bunnies. They began by gluing on a frame.

I then taught them how to draw a bunny and they drew two of them and picked their favorite.

They colored, cut and glued on their bunny.

How cute!!

Colorful Hearts

First graders started a new project today. They began with learning about primary and secondary colors. We painted all of the colors on a sheet of paper to use in the following weeks. The students were pretty amazed at the colors they could create with just Red, Yellow and Blue.

Today we reviewed all the different kinds of shapes and lines they could use while painting their hearts. We also reviewed which primary colors created the secondary colors. I called this "art math".

 A heart was traced in each color and then the hearts were filled in with shapes, lines and designs.

Today kids worked collaboratively at their table to fill out the color mixing sheet to glue onto the back of their art.

Cutting out hearts, gluing on their hearts and finishing painting their hearts were the next steps.

Winter Cardinal

It's time for winter themed artworks in our school. Second grade is learning about value and drawing from life.  We started out painting a value-colored background using black, white and blue.

Even though the kids thought it was tricky, we sketched cardinals from still lives set up at their table.

This week, students worked on gluing on a frame, adding branches and pine needles onto their artwork.

They also continued to work on drawing cardinals.

Today students worked on gluing on a black frame, finishing their background and creating their cardinal. The kids were given choices on how they could color their cardinal. I had out crayons, colored pencils, oil pastels, sharpies and watercolors. 

It was fun to see the variety of mediums used. After the cardinal was colored, students cut it out and glued it onto their background.
