Jasper John's alphabet

It's getting towards the end of the year and so we have moved to one day art projects. We started out looking at artist Jasper Johns. We also talked about Pop Art and what it means. Onto the creating! Kindergarteners wrote out the letters of the alphabet in a "crazy" style. Overlapping, imperfect, wild letter writing was encouraged. A fun way to integrate literacy into art as well.

We did a quick review of how to use watercolor paints and then off they went!

Some of the colorful finished artworks!

Hot Air Balloons

This is a great end of the year project.

We started out by looking at pictures of different hot air balloons and then drew them with pencil.

We began coloring hem with markers.

The next week we brainstormed backgrounds and colored them in with crayons. A red frame was also glued on.

The final week we worked on finishing them up. They turned out so colorful!

Self-portraits

In kindergarten, on the first day of art, I have the students draw their self portrait. I pack them up and save them until the end of the year for our last big project.

We started out painting a back ground and then drew ourselves with pencil. The pencil lines were drawn over with sharpies.

Kindergarteners worked on coloring in the eyes and mouth with crayon. I felt having them paint that would be too detailed and they would get frustrated. The skin, hair and clothing were painted in with paints.

Finally, we were ready put all the pieces together. The first day of art self portraits were glued onto the back and the painted backgrounds were glued on the other side.

Black lines that were painted over were redrawn. The self portrait was then cut out and glued on.

I like showing some examples of where the kids were and where they got to!

And here is another one!

And still another!

It just goes to show you how much incredible growth there is in this year of kindergarten!

Paper weaving and body drawing

"We started out this art project learning how to weave paper. This was easy for some, challenging for others. We were going for the optical illusion look.

The edges were then trimmed and glued and read for a body to be added.

The second week we worked on drawing a body and outlining with sharpie. Details were added to make each student unique such as special clothing or pets or something they were interested in.

The last week, students were introduced to chalk pastels and learned about their beautiful blending abilities. After coloring their bodies in, they were cut out and glued onto their paper weaving. I love how unique they all turned out!
