Winter Art Camp

We just finished up a 4 week art camp held on Fridays in January. I had 26 students from K-4 th grade. We completed 4 projects and we had a blast. In addition to art, we played games in the gym, ate some yummy snacks and had creative free time where students could paint, draw, read, or play with clay. Here are the projects we created!

Amazon rain sticks. We talked about the origin of rain sticks and looked at examples. Students were given paper and paint and designed their paper in any way they wanted. In the last week, the sticks were assembled. Nails were poked into wrapping paper tubes and card stock circles were glued onto each end after beans were added. Nails were covered with glue and the paper was also glued to the stick. They made such a cool sound!

Snowflakes. Two thin papers were watercolored and left to dry. Another paper was painted gold and was left to dry as well. In the following week, students learned how to fold and cut snowflakes. They chose their favorite to glue onto the gold paper. The gold paper was cut out and glued onto a white frame. The last week was spent adding the colorful mosaic paper. We talked about symmetry in adding the small details. These turned out so beautiful!

Snowy Day Winter Scene. We read the book The Snowy Day and talked about the kind of artwork in the book. A background was painted and left to dry. In the following weeks, paper and fabric was put out and stud oiled create whatever they wanted in their winter scene. The art was glued onto a frame and " snow" was added to complete the creation!

Hearts. Lots of colored paper was put out and students traced a heart onto their paper. They used oil pastels to design their heart however they chose. They cut their heart out and glued it onto a different color of paper. These turned out very vibrant and festive !

Castle at Night

Kindergarteners learned so much in this art project. One of th favorite things I saw emerge from this artwork is the kindergarteners  confidence in their drawing abilities. Right away when I asked them if they thought they could create a castle like the example shown, almost everyone indicated with a thumbs down that they couldn't do it. The first week we drew the castle twice and they chose their favorite to add details to it with crayons. All of the kids were successful.

The next week was spent painting in the castle however they wanted. We reviewed how to use watercolors and how to "unlock the magic" of the paints by just using more water and not just getting more paint. They were surprised by how much paint was still in the brush.

The final week was a busy one! The kids spent quite a bit of time carefully cutting out their castle and gluing it onto black paper.

Finally details were added. They cut out and glued on a moon and drew and colored in a horizon line. I taught them how to make their stars "twinkle" by drawing them in with white pastels and pulling out the edges with their finger. They were so amazed by this!!

The end results were some pretty cool castles!

Mitten in the Sky

Kindergarten students made darling mittens all the while learning about math and patterning. The first week students drew snowflakes with white oil pastels and then painted a beautiful sky over them.

The next time they came to art they traced a mitten, drew in lines, patterns and shapes with sharpies.

The dial week the kids finished coloring the mittens, cut them out, added a wrist and glued them onto their sky. They turned out great!
