Ornaments

Today Kinders worked on a 1 day project before break starts. They started out tracing, cutting and gluing on paper ornaments.

They were colored with special crayons I got out today-- construction paper crayons and metallic crayons. There was excitement in the air!

The final step was to paint inside the ornaments with glittery silver and gold paint. They turned out beautiful!!

Candy Canes

Today students started some seasonal art because everyone loves candy canes! We looked at different candy canes and students created them with sharpies.

Coloring the candy was next. Crayons were used to create colorful patterns and stripes.

Finally, the background was painted in with whatever watercolors the students wanted.

I think these turned out great!!

Dancing Giraffe

Students began working on this artwork based on the book Giraffes Can't Dance.

For the first week, we began by reading the story. We talked about texture, overlapping paints and adding several layers. Then the painting began! Kids painted and drew in texture and created the messiest tables they'd ever seen! We had a blast!

The following week, second graders started out painting a glowing moon onto their background.

Then we worked on how to draw Gerald the giraffe. He was a little tricky, and the kids didn't think they could do it. We practiced a couple of times and then I let them go. They turned out great!

This week was spent coloring, adding spots, outlining and adding details to their giraffes.

The final week was spent cutting out and gluing on Gerald. I love how different they all turned out!

Aquarium fish

The hallway next to my art room was looking empty. Kindergarten to the rescue! We began by reading the book Fish Eyes and looked at the way the illustrator used color, line and pattern to create beautiful fish. Students then drew a fish, colored with crayons, pastels and finished up with watercolors. These fish were cut out and taped up in the aquariums outside the art room.

The hallway is just loaded with beautiful fish now!!

Sugar Cookies

Today in art, we had some fun creating for the season. We discussed baking and cookies and looked at lots of ways to decorate sugar cookies.  Students began designing, drawing, coloring, cutting and gluing their decorated sugar cookie onto a brightly colored background.

These sugar cookies look good enough to eat!
