Castle at Night

Kindergarteners learned so much in this art project. One of th favorite things I saw emerge from this artwork is the kindergarteners  confidence in their drawing abilities. Right away when I asked them if they thought they could create a castle like the example shown, almost everyone indicated with a thumbs down that they couldn't do it. The first week we drew the castle twice and they chose their favorite to add details to it with crayons. All of the kids were successful.

The next week was spent painting in the castle however they wanted. We reviewed how to use watercolors and how to "unlock the magic" of the paints by just using more water and not just getting more paint. They were surprised by how much paint was still in the brush.

The final week was a busy one! The kids spent quite a bit of time carefully cutting out their castle and gluing it onto black paper.

Finally details were added. They cut out and glued on a moon and drew and colored in a horizon line. I taught them how to make their stars "twinkle" by drawing them in with white pastels and pulling out the edges with their finger. They were so amazed by this!!

The end results were some pretty cool castles!
